AltoCumulus Solutions is a cloud service provider specializing in small to medium sized private
sector IT solutions. AltoCumulus has been contacted by MotoMart Inc. to propose and if selected,
provide a cloud based solution for their vehicle inventory module, as well as the customer web portal for
sales and service.
MotorMart Inc. is a medium sized auto dealership comprised of 7 dealerships approximately
250 employees, situated across the Mid-Atlantic region. MotoMart’s existing IT infrastructure is
supported through a physical datacenter located in the Philadelphia based corporate office. This
datacenter houses the backend infrastructure consisting of approximately 20 physical database,
application and web servers, a storage area Network (SAN) and the Disaster Recovery or backup library.
The datacenter is supported by a staff of 5 technical team members as well as the IT branch supervisor.
Front end clients are installed in each dealership to provide VPN and web-based access to company data
and applications residing in the Philadelphia datacenter.
As the MotoMart Inc. expands in size and inventory, by adding new dealerships and staff, so
does the IT requirements necessary to support the corporate mission. The effort to keep ahead of this
expansion by upgrading physical network and server components, operating systems and SAN capacity
has proven to be costly and problematic for MotoMart Inc.
MotoMart Inc. seeks to move two of its major enterprise applications from the Philadelphia
datacenter to a cloud solution. Specifically, the Vehicle Inventory Management database or (VIM), which
includes the Sales and Financing module; and the CustomerCare web-based module which provides
existing customers a web based portal to vehicle, maintenance and service information, will be moved to
the cloud environment. This move will include the applications, databases including the meta-data, as
well as the web servers supporting these two modules. AltoCumulus will provide Infrastructure services
to include network and web based connectivity, as well as platform services comprised of Windows
based virtual servers to house and support all database, web and application functionality within the
scope of these two modules. It is AltoCumulus’ goal to provide a manageable, cost-effective cloud
solution that meets all SLA requirements to support the MotoMart Inc. operational, processing and
Statement of Need
The production potential has grown and cloud storage and management is needed to
successfully combat issues that may arise because of expansion and development. The best way to
ensure inventory and documents are kept up to date and still remain manageable is through a fully
functional and fully operational cloud service provider. The market has its competition but Altocumulus
Solutions is miles away from the competition. The cloud service provider assumes all risk in information
storage and security while the consumer obtains the comfort and trust of the cloud service provider, in
that information will be held in high regard.
The cloud services provided will be used effectively to help Motormart Inc. convert how data is
stored and used, to help customers and business prosper. The efforts put forth by our cloud based
services will effectively help to save time, money and effort. In order to be promised a service that meets
the needs and requirements of Motormart Inc., Altocumulus must ensure to you that our services are
easy in usage and operation and very cost-efficient. The usage of this cloud service will ensure mobility
and connectivity with information, customers and data. These services are guaranteed to provide
results, effectively, efficiently and with little effort on your part.
The basic project here is to demonstrate our understanding of the course material. We, having
formed Team Blue, will demonstrate the proper initiation and planning methodologies outlined in the
Project Management Body of Knowledge Manual. Team Blue will do so by preparing a hypothetical
project plan from the perspective of the aforementioned AltoCumulus consulting firm in accordance
with the acting out of a typical client/consultant relationship. Our goal is to provide standard
implementation and planning documents such as the business case, or statement of work proposal, that
would be supplied to MotoMart Inc. as a bidder for the project. Assuming the SOW is accepted in this
case, Team Blue will proceed forward through the project planning phase of project management until
the theoretical beginning of the execution phase of the MotoMart Inc. Project.
In this case the building of a private cloud based web server (database) for the internal vehicle
inventory management system of the 20 dealerships with the option to expand as new dealerships are
created. The sales financing module indicates the MSRP of the VIN with applicable financing incentives
that can by updated in real time from any location (Corporate office can change financing incentives and
local dealerships can update sales records or request transfer of inventory from warehouse or other
locations.) The customer module will need to provide for the secure login of clients. They will have up to
date information from the corporate network regarding payments (for financing info) maintenance
scheduling, or routine communication with their local dealership. Messages can be pushed out to
customers to inform them of upcoming scheduled appointments, payments due, or recall/security
information. The cloud-based network will have to integrate with the current datacenter at the
corporate office. Servers, databases, or applications present at the corporate office are unknown, and
will need to be addressed as assumption made during the planning process. Budgeting will have to
include supplies/hardware, man hours, and upgrade/maintenance plans for the cloud network.
Regulations for financial information of company and private users, user information, reporting
regulations will need to be addressed.
